    Kilauea Volcano Bike & Lava Adventure

    Big Island Activities - Ride a bike through the Volcanoes National Park and explore the lava in the Puna district all on one tour! Experience the volcano up close and personal as you ride through plush rain forest and lava frozen in time on your 21 speed mountain bike. Your cycling adventure takes place around the rim of the Kilauea Volcano and down a portion of the Chain of Craters road. It consists of mostly level terrain with a couple of small uphill and downhill sections thrown in for fun! Along with the cycling portion, you will hike through the rainforest that leads directly through an amazing lava tube. Also witness the heart of the volcano exploding at Halema'uma'a Crater. During your ride, you will stop at the Jagger Museum, home to many seismographs, which monitor every twitch of the earth.

    After the bike tour of the Volcanoes National Park, journey to the Puna District by van. Travel down the "Red Road" where the scenery is amazing as you weave through the rain forest and take in the jagged cliffs overlooking the crystal blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Walk out to the new black sand beach at Kaimu, which has forever been changed by the lava flows in the early 1990s. Next stop, search for molten lava! Your guide will take you on a short hike over the lava fields to view the incredible molten lava streaming down the mountain from the Pu'u O'o vent. See lava in motion as it descends down to the sea. As the sun sets, you will experience a dramatic change in the landscape as the fire from the sea becomes alive in the darkness of this remote area.

    Enjoy a specialty style picnic lunch during the bike ride and a light dinner toward evening. Island fresh fruit, macadamia nuts and other assorted snacks and drinks will also be served during the tour.

     

    TOUR NOTES:
    Elevation is 4000ft so wear comfortable clothing in layers, sunscreen, and covered shoes. Bring a camera and sunglasses. Tour vans will follow the cyclists during the bike ride, cameras and other personal belongings may be left in the van if you wish. We also provide packs for those guests wishing to carry their cameras at all times. You may rack your bike and ride along in the van with our guide during any portion of the tour. If you have someone in your party who does not wish to ride at all, we welcome them to enjoy the tour with us in the van. They will make all the scheduled stops with the cycling group thus receiving the full tour!

    TOUR RESTRICTIONS:
    Participants must be at least 12 years old, 54" tall and comfortable riding a bike. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Natural sulfur gasses may affect those with respiratory problems. You will not see molten lava. Tour content or itinerary may change due to weather conditions or volcanic activity.

    FOOD & BEVERAGE:
    A specialty picnic style lunch, Island fresh fruit, macadamia nuts, assorted snacks and drinks are provided - Vegetarian choice available.

    SKILL:
    Intermediate - Participants must know how to ride a bike.

    FITNESS:
    Good.

    EQUIPMENT:
    Provided - Bike, helmet, gloves, rain jacket and custom souvenir water bottle are provided.

    TOUR DURATION:
    The tour is approximately 10 hours from the Hilo area and approximately 14 hours from the Kona/Waikoloa area. A full day of adventure!!

    PICK UP TIMES:
    Waikoloa: Roy's in the Waikoloa Kings Shops.
    Kona: Buns in the Sun in the Lanihau Shopping Center on Palani Rd.
    Hilo: Queen Lili'uokalani Gardens or Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on Banyan Drive.
